ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Snooty Jewelry owner and long-time vegan, Jeanine Taylor, is pursuing her dream of earning
a living at something she loves to do: designing, creating, and selling her own line of
jewelry. Her simple, yet elegant, earrings, necklaces and bracelets
in 14-karat
gold, sterling silver, and 14k gold-filled, feature semi-precious and simulated gemstones,
Swarovski crystals, and handmade ceramic and glass beads. Prices are affordable, ranging
from $5 to $25 for most sterling silver and 14k gold-filled designs, and $25 to $70 for
most 14-karat gold creations.
The
forty-something native Californian moved to Massachusetts in 1996 to pursue her career as a
manager at DIGITAL Semiconductor in Hudson, MA. "It was great growing up right on the
beach near Santa Cruz, but I love the distinctive seasons in New England and have made
many close friends." Jeanine adds, "Its another one of the great things
about being a vegetarian: wherever I go, its easy to make friends when you have
vegetarianism in common. I know I will go out of my way to support vegetarian causes and
businesses, and have found my customers feel the same way about supporting my
venture."
Vegetarian Jewelry:
WHATS IN A NAME?
Those who understand the connection between vegetarianism and jewelry often ask, "Why
the name Snooty?" "Many non-vegetarians believe that
vegetarians think their healthy lifestyle makes them better than other
people. The word 'Snooty' is a tongue-in-cheek reference to this
idea. The word also fits the classic style of my designs.
The difference being their affordability. I also like it because its a funny word, and
one people remember."
VEGETARIANISM AS A METAPHOR
If youre a vegetarian, youve probably read many ingredient labels and found
the product would have been acceptable were it not for one or two ingredients that could easily
have been replaced with a vegetarian one, or omitted all together.
"Its really
a shame when manufacturers exclude an entire segment of the population because they
didnt put a little more thought into their product." Jeanine says with a hint
of frustration in her voice.
"Unfortunately, virtually all jewelry designers use some type of animal
product such as pearls, shell, bone, silk, and/or leather in their designs.
The great
thing about Snooty Jewelry is that like vegetarian food, everyone can enjoy it:
meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. Our customers can feel good knowing that not only is the
single item they purchase cruelty-free, but theyre supporting a company that
doesnt use animal products in ANY of their merchandise."
BEYOND
VEGETARIANISM
Although they provide beautiful jewelry that is free of animal products, Snooty Jewelry
doesnt stop there. "Were concerned for people, as
well as the environment. Our packaging contains no plastic, is
100% post-consumer waste (PCW) chlorine-free recycled paper, printed
with soy-based ink. Ten percent of our
profits go to non-profit organizations focusing on animal, human, and environmental
welfare. As we grow, full-time employees will receive one hour of paid time off to perform community
service for every two hours the employee volunteers." Jeanines parting comment
was, "The purpose of Snooty Jewelry is not to make a ton of money and live in an
ivory tower. To have purpose in my life, I need to give something back to the
global community. If Snooty Jewelry is successful, great; that will mean more
opportunities to make a difference."
